The purpose of this study is to learn more about the mood, behavior and brains of people who smoke. We want to look at how daily hassles might affect how emotional distress is managed during an attempt to stop smoking. This study does not offer a treatment to stop smoking.

Reducing Distress and Tobacco Use in Cancer Survivors with At-Home Brain Stimulation
The purpose of this study is to find out if transcranial direct current stimulation (TDCS) is easy to use at home. We also want to find out how well it works for reducing distress and decreasing cigarette use. TDCS is a form of brain stimulation. This type of stimulation is done outside of the body. The largest risk with this study is minor discomfort such as warmth, itching or tingling sensation during treatment.

Study of Decreasing Drinking in Heavy Alcohol Users
The purpose of this study is to see how a tool called transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) may change the brain's response to alcohol related pictures. TMS is a technique that does not require surgery or anesthesia. The treatment may help reduce alcohol cravings in people with alcohol use disorder.

Helping Those with Serious Mental Illness Stop Smoking
People who smoke and have serious mental illness are 2-8 times more likely to fail standard stop smoking treatments. The purpose of this study is to look at ways to help this population in their efforts to quit smoking. The study tests two different cost-effective methods designed to help those with serious mental illness quit smoking. This study will be done completely online.

Studying How Stress Affects Health in People Living with HIV
Many people living with HIV disease have stress in their lives that can negatively affect their health. The goal of this study is to understand how long-term stress changes how our brain and immune systems work. We also want to see how these changes affect our feelings, thoughts, and actions. By learning this, we hope to create better treatments for problems like depression and drug use. The study is open to individuals living with HIV.

Improving Physical Function in Older Adults with Kidney Disease
The purpose of this study is to find out if two different programs can help older people with serious kidney problems. The first program involves exercise with quick movements 3 times per week for 12 weeks is about exercising quickly with weights, and the second program involves taking classes on how to live a healthy lifestyle once per week for 12 weeks is about living a healthy life. The study wants to see if older people enjoy these programs and if they can be done safely. We are looking for volunteers who live within 20 miles of the Reynolda Campus.
